In this insights post, we showcase how Naturally Compliant’s ecology team keeps a £700 million, multi-year infrastructure project on track. By combining expert planning with hands-on site delivery, the team protects wildlife and habitats while ensuring construction progresses on schedule.
Â
On this major development project, the team carried out targeted pre-construction surveys, coordinated specialist checks for bats, badgers, and herpetofauna, and implemented species protection plans covering bats, badgers, fish, invertebrates, and birds. Toolbox talks and on-site guidance supported ecological considerations were embedded in daily work, with constraints integrated directly into work permits and project planning.
Â
The project faced several key ecological challenges. Badger setts and bat roosts were identified within the development footprint, and Japanese knotweed was discovered in areas needed for site investigations. Our project ecologist lead acted swiftly, coordinating specialist surveys, securing the necessary licences, and implementing mitigation measures in line with best practice and NatureScot guidance. Works were carefully re-sequenced around sensitive areas, ensuring the protection of species and habitats while preventing programme delays and maintaining full compliance.
Â
A large section of ancient woodland was originally scheduled for felling to install an access track. The project ecologist carefully assessed the risks and reviewed the design, and then proposed a reduced felling area that would retain the majority of the ancient woodland and soils. This approach was reviewed and approved by the senior project team, resulting in 74% of the ancient woodland being saved, maintaining critical habitat and supporting long-term ecosystem function.
Â
Long-term biodiversity benefits were also achieved. The team advised on and implemented additional biodiversity enhancements, including bird boxes, bat boxes, sand martin walls, insect hotels, and pine marten boxes, and engaged with local schools to promote environmental awareness.
Â
Key highlights of the project ecology lead’s construction-phase expertise – we:
Â
Avoided costly programme delays through proactive species management and on-site planning.
Preserved ancient woodland and soils, supporting long-term habitat conservation.
Implemented practical biodiversity enhancements, including bird boxes, bat boxes, and insect hotels.
Embedded ecological guidance into daily construction activities, ensuring compliance and smooth project delivery.
Â
The outcome demonstrates how Naturally Compliant’s construction-phase ecological expertise adds real value – keeping major multi-year development projects on track, ensuring compliance, driving environmental performance, and leaving a positive legacy for wildlife and habitats.
